Homeowners in England and wales paid £8.3 Billion in stamp duty during 2016. This is a 17% rise from the £7.1 Billion total Stamp Duty contributions seen in 2015.
Considering the overall costs of stamp duty, between 2001 and 2017, homeowners in London paid a total of £40,576. This is 320% higher than the average for England and Wales. In the South East, the total value of stamp duty paid between 2001 and 2017 was £20,133, while Wales ranked lowest at £4,489.
The portion of first-time buyers having to pay stamp duty has also risen, from 47% in 2001 to 78% in 2017.
