It has been calculated that nearly 3 million couples are not claiming their free tax break. A HMRC campaign has been created to reverse the low take up on transferrable marriage allowance worth up to £220 a year.
The tax break involves couples where one person pays no tax due to their income being lower than the personal allowance. The said couples are able to transfer up to £1,100 of the personal allowance to their tax=paying partner.
The HMRC have started that the marriage allowance has been claimed by 1.3 million out of the 4.2 million people it calculates are eligible.
As long as the taxpaying partner earns the basic rate the couple are eligible to the allowance.
