It's that time of year again when alongside the Christmas shopping, celebrating with friends and family, and eating mince pies, you need to start thinking seriously about your taxes as the deadline for filing for the 2014/15 tax year is now just over one month away.
Filing over the festive period
You can file your tax return online at any time, day or night, up until the deadline of midnight on 31st January 2016, and it appears that the festive period is a popular time to file. Last year HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) reported that 1,773 online tax returns were submitted on Christmas Day with the busiest time between midday and 1pm.
Escape from the festivities
While for many of us thinking about our finances is furthest from our minds at this time of year, for some it provides a welcome escape from the party games, or from spending time with the in laws! In total over the three day festive period HMRC received almost 25,000 returns with almost 18,000 returns filed on Christmas Eve, and over 5,000 on Boxing Day. New Years Eve is another popular day to file with over 28,000 tax returns filed last year as individuals are keen to start the new year with their taxes up to date.
